- Emily Dickinson was born in Amherst, Massachusetts, in 1830. After reaching adulthood she chose to remain in her family home, and very seldom left. She was a writer of the Romanticism era, and most of her poems were not published until after her death in 1886. Interestingly, she chose not to read the poetry of Walt Whitman after hearing it was "disgraceful".
- Attached is the most popular photos of Emily Dickinson.
- The poem "The Soul Selects Her Own Society" is very representative of Dickinson's voice as it values true love and sympathy. It also describes being very selective of who you surround yourself with, and that is very representative of Dickinson as she only accepted visitors on rare occasions, and never left the house.
- The Soul Selects Her Own Society
Then- Shuts the Door-
To her divine Majority-
Present no more-
Unmoved- she notes the chariots- pausing-
At her low gate-
Unmoved- an Emperor be kneeling
Upon her mat-
I've known her- from an ample nation-
Choose One-
Then- close the valves of her attention-

I have hear some of her poems every now and again. I'm glad that you put what it's about in here, I wasn't sure if the theme was continuing with the second stanza but it did. Definitely want to her more from her.
ReplyDeleteI've read a few of her poems but it really connects when hearing more about her personal life and how she was very reserved. Its also interesting that her poems were published after her death, that she didn't get to experience the success of her own work.
ReplyDeleteOne of things about Dickinson that I always find intriguing is that she didn't publish her poems. I think this is really special because it shows that she is just writing for herself. You don't see that very often so it sets her apart from most poets.
